We decided to do microlots because Indian coffee is simply far too diverse and heterogenous to standardise a roast and call it a day! Also, because we work directly with so many smallholder producers, we end up with beautiful but very small lots of coffee. For e.g. in 2018, 134 women in BR Hills harvested, hand-pulped and segregated coffee for us. This became Microlot 8! We are now on Microlot 18 and it's been the best possible showcase of the diversity of Indian coffees!
MICROLOT 18 | MISHRANA
This microlot is a fun 'DIY' sort of coffee but the foundation is a small lot Arabica Peaberry from BR Hills, Karnataka. Peaberry coffee beans can offer brightness, sweetness and complex flavours in a cup of coffee. The jury is out on whether peaberry beans are superior than regular coffees. However, our personal take as roasters is that peaberries do result in more even roasts and cups. We also tend to agree that the density of the bean produces a 'full' brew.
A peaberry is an incompletely or irregularly mature coffee seed. A regular coffee cherry has two seeds that are removed and roasted. The iconic image of a flattish, oval bean with a squiggle down its middle is exactly one of the two coffee seeds a coffee cherry produces. However, occasionally, due to environmental factors (emerging research tells us shade cover plays a role) and genetic factors, a coffee cherry produces just a single, round bean - called a peaberry.
